The Mission of God
Mission Report /Shillane Chen
The Mission of God
God has a mission: to redeem His people for His glory. When humanity fell (Genesis 3), God’s plan was—and remains—to give us Jesus as our Savior and restore us to our Creator. Yet this is just the beginning. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) should govern every aspect of Church life, as we are the body of Christ. This encompasses: Nurturing and instructing our children; Serving those in need; Evangelizing; Engaging in apologetics; Planting churches; Teaching and preaching; and Worshiping as one body. Christ has called us to make disciples of all nations—baptizing them and teaching obedience to His commands. This mission starts in our homes and extends to our communities and the world beyond.
Every Christian participates in God’s global mission. While not all of us are called to distant lands, we each have a mission where we are: Witnessing to friends, coworkers, and family; Supporting and sending those called to go further. In His sovereignty, God has ordained both the salvation of His people and the means to achieve it. His command is clear: go and preach.
Recent years have brought unprecedented challenges: Global conflicts; Natural disasters; and the COVID-19 pandemic. These have led to: Confusion and uncertainty; Loss of loved ones; Economic hardship; and Spiritual disorientation. In such times, evangelism may not feel like a priority. Yet these challenges prompt us to ask: How can we reconnect with God’s calling amidst such difficulties?
Our church embraces a powerful theme: A Family Following Jesus: Rooted in love, growing in love, and acting in love. In addition, we learned from OMF’s six ways to reach God’s world: pray, learn, welcome, mobilize, go, and send (at 2023 FECDB Mission Conference)
To reflect on the correlation between our church’s theme along with the 6 ways to reach God’s world, the following are just how we regroup under “Mission”:
Rooted in Love:
Pray:
- During the month of Ramadan, we shared daily prayers and learning for different Muslim countries and people’s groups. The purpose is to make their stories known to us and we can pray for their salvation.
- Cultural immersion visits to Rowland Heights Mosque
Welcome:
- We had scheduled speakers and missionaries to come and share their ministries with the pastoral staff and with the congregants. This helps us to understand the challenges they faced in the field and the kind of support we can provide such as prayer, financial support, bringing awareness, etc.
Grow in Love:
Learn:
- During the first 6 months of 2024, with the collaboration of OMF US, we conducted total of 15 sessions of Sunday Schools, 11 in Czone and 4 in Mzone focus on Art and Mission Integration.
- Topics such as What is God’s creation? Defining ways for Creative Care? The Kingdom view of God; creative ways for gospel sharing etc. where we could utilize different methods of creativity to share what we learned through different forms of art.
- Planning for the KAIROS course in 2025.
Mobilize:
- In May, FECDB joined forces with FECA along with other churches and groups to serve the Muslim communities. 16 of us from FECDB’s Czone volunteered where we served and worked with Muslim children and their families including their grandparents (over 100 of volunteers and Afghan families). We had a live band, English teaching, Japanese Nagomi Pastel artworks, watercolor artwork, paper origami, face painting, snacks, etc. a
- In July, a couple of our youths attended an Afghan family where they taught English and shared God’s love with them.
- In September, we visited the San Gabriel LAN (Love Afghan Neighbor) team where they held a picnic fun day (a total of over 100, volunteers and Afghans).
- In November, we will have the Operation Christmas Child’s shoebox packing party; being the collection/drop off location for the communities; and promoting for journey to discipleship, a shoebox program, where each recipient will receive 12 weeks of discipleship.
Action in Love:
GO:
- UK STM (July): Reverent Albert Wong led a team of 4 to the UK in July where they visited the Hong Kong immigrants’ families, sharing testimonies at churches, fellowships with the overseas students from Mainland China, and more. In March, Reverent Wong and FECA’s mission director, Edwin Leung, had also visited the Muslim communities to understand and assessed the needs and potential serving opportunities.
- Taiwan West Coast STM (July): This mission trip started 17 years ago, coordinated by 3 families from FECSGV who wanted to share God’s love and hope to the middle schoolers in Tai Chung.
- School Program: 6 of us from FECDB joined this year’s School Program along with many other churches where we served 14 schools. 2 of us traveled to different schools to be the Inspiration Speaker, where they shared messages that can inspire and encourage the students. They also visited the school principals, and classrooms and prayed for them. The other 4 of us served as School Site Leader and Class teachers where they engaged with the middle school students through English teaching. We utilized the US holidays as part of cultural exchange and led them to see God’s love for his people through the teachings.
- Adult Happiness Group learning opportunity: 1 of us joined the second week of this trip where they get to learn through discussion and learning groups, attend prayer meetings, and witnessing to others through visitation.
- Philippine – Art and Mission exploring trip (July): after learning in the first 6 months from our Sunday school teachings, 2 of us had the opportunity to join OMF US for this new, unconventional trip where we worked with various local agencies, visit the Chinese Diaspora group, and working with the Mission Leaders Training Center to understand the challenges they faced, cultural art exchange activities, mingling with local people through different activities. This trip led us to understand that our Creator’s loves for us, and in return we need to care for His Creations through different means.
SEND:
- FECDB continues to be in partnership with 1 couple where they served in the field and ministered to God’s people. In the past, we had 2 couples where they served in long terms in the field but now had returned and continued serving God’s people in a different capacity.
Call to Action: Serving the Lord and engaging with His people is not as difficult as we might think, and you are already part of it. Will you recommit yourself to make our God known to the world?
Shillane Chen
